" ~Deathrockstar “..the soft voice from Cholil Mahmud is a drama of its own, the music was composed more varied and magnificent. "Debu-Debu Berterbangan" has angelic sounds, "Desember" and "Melankolia" present the orchestration layer. Even the song "Di Udara" is a long composition full of choir. This recycling process makes it all quite different. Brilliant. " ~Trax Magz “The whole album is littered with welcome surprises. Virtually every track ends up far from where it began. Perhaps the best thing to be said about Pandai Besi is that the band sounds like it exists as its own entity, without the baggage of its main, more famous, persona. The songs make their original versions feel like demos..” ~The Jakarta Globe _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Pandai Besi is a musical collective resulting from the mutation of the Efek Rumah Kaca band. In March 2013, they just completed the live recording sessions at the legendary Studio Lokananta Solo, and spawned an album titled 'Daur Baur'. The album contains nine songs selected from two albums owned by Efek Rumah Kaca. Pandai Besi re-arranged and re-forged nine songs into a complex musical composition, presenting new interpretations that are completely different from the original style of Efek Rumah Kaca’s music . Efek Rumah Kaca History Cholil Mahmud (vocals, guitar), Adrian Yunan Faisal (bass, backing vocals), and Akbar Bagus Sudibyo (drums, backing vocals) are the remaining three left from the journey since 2001 in 'studio melulu'. With patience, they're composing their songs. They have used many names, beginning with "Hush" (when they still had five members), then "Superego", and finally "Efek Rumah Kaca" in 2005. They took that name from one of their song titles, written in 2003. In every song that they compose, the composition is designed congruent with the theme“speculative reality”. So the music is not just meant to entertain, but there is a reflection, and reality is also presented, photographing the time. The lyrics are laid out, sometimes poetic, sometimes advanced, with a wide perspective, and rich with Indonesian language. They present simple pop music, but don’t forget to experiment with the sounds of indie-rock, progressive rock, punk, new wave, jazz, and whatever else sounds good, mixed with the influence of their idols: Jeff Buckley, Jon Anderson, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, to Bjork. “Melankolia” and “Di Udara” were their first released songs. In 2006 the songs were compiled into Do Re Mi (Paviliun Records) and Todays Of Yesterday (Bad Sector Records). Efek Rumah Kaca began to exist, introducing themselves to society. In August of 2007, Efek Rumah Kaca toured many cities in Java with their friends. It was an introduction to their debut album. In September 2007, the selftitled debut album of Efek Rumah Kaca was released through Paviliun Records. The introduction went smoothly. The response for their debut album was received well, beginning with positive reviews from writers on the internet. The first single “Jatuh Cinta Itu Biasa Saja” started to get attention from the media and music listeners in Indonesia. But, the most influential thing that spread the name of Efek Rumah Kaca to the national public was their second single, “Cinta Melulu” - a cheerful satire of the Indonesian music industry which is dominated by love song themes that present mediocre musical compositions and lyrics. Doors were opened, and the debut album of Efek Rumah Kaca delivered stage performance series at the end of 2007 until end of 2008. ERK also received "The Best Cutting Edge" award from MTV Indonesia Music Awards in 2008, the "Editor's Choice 2008" award from Rolling Stone Indonesia, the "Class Music Heroes 2008" award, and it was nominated for Anugrah Musik Indonesia Award in 2008. Less than a year later, on December 19, 2008, they released their second album named “Kamar Gelap” under Aksara Records. On this album, Efek Rumah Kaca, made the album more colorful, with richer shades. Friends were invited to play together, Mondo, Ade (Sore) and Iman Fattah (Lain, Zeke and The Popo, Raksasa) enlivened the sound recording. Angki Purbandono, an artist from Jogjakarta also came along, and his photography art soon became the cover content of the second album. On one occasion, Efek Rumah Kaca filled a special section about elections in the Kompas daily (for one month, published every Saturday in January 2009). On another occasion, Efek Rumah Kaca continued to play stage-to-stage, singing the sensitive lyrics with audiences throughout Indonesia. Among these opportunities, Efek Rumah Kaca was saving their energy while building plans. Clearly, Efek Rumah Kaca is still the same band since they were established : trying to write songs as beautiful as possible, capturing reality, and hoping to give an equivalent color image in the head. “They tackle social issues such as humanity, sexuality, religion, human rights and politics through vocalist Cholil Mahmud’s witty poetics. Efek Rumah Kaca swiftly became known as a thinking person’s band. That cerebral quality made it the band of choice whenever talk shows or workshops wanted an edgy guest that could both entertain and impress intellectually” (The Jakarta Globe, 2013). The Invention of ‘Pandai Besi’ The birth of Pandai Besi starts from Joyland Festival (June 2012), when Efek Rumah Kaca played a musical format that had a more 'crowded formation' because it was reinforced by some musician friends: Poppie Airil (Bass), Andi Hans Sabarudin (guitar), M. Asranur (Piano/Keyboard), and Augustinus Pandji Mahardika (Trumpet / Flute). The name Pandai Besi was officially used when they appeared at "Superbad Vol.45" (November 2012). Superbad is a monthly music show featuring lots of potential bands from Jakarta and other cities, it is held regularly at The Jaya Pub presented by Indra Amenk and Keke Tumbuan (The Secret Agents). A tight concert schedule, plus Adrian’s ( Efek Rumah Kaca's original bassist ) health conditions ( that never healed completely) hampered the smooth completion of Efek Rumah Kaca’s 3rd album, but ithas not at all dampened the creativity of Akbar and Cholil to continued 'the job'; they try to find many ways to refuse boredom. Limitations of musical skills, routine office work and the health condition of Adrian became a trigger for Cholil and Akbar to find the right gap in order to continue working. As if to challenge themselves, they invited four musician friends who were deliberately selected for their different backgrounds and musical tastes to ‘recycle’ Efek Rumah Kaca songs . From this process Cholil and Akbar hope to find fresh energy and new inspiration. Two times a week practicing in the studio on a regular basis, they finally managed to forge nine selected songs from two ERK albums. Over time, these formations added two members, Nastasha Abigail and Irma Hidayana on vocal division. Nine Efek Rumah Kaca songs which have been recycled / re-arranged into ‘Daur Baur’ album are: 1. "Hujan Jangan Marah" 2. "Menjadi Indonesia" 3. "Debu-debu Berterbangan" 4. "Desember" 5. "Melankolia" 6. "Laki-laki Pemalu" 7. "Jalang" 8. "Di Udara" 9. "Jangan Bakar Buku" In March 2013 Pandi Besi successfully recorded the songs on the legendary Studio Lokananta which uses a system of joint financing by the fans (Crowdfunding method ). Every 'supporter' gets various rewards in the form of a physical release like cassete tapes, CDs, or vinyl, depending on which donations support package they choose. Approximately there were 600 people supported the Pandai Besi Crowdfunding within one month ( Due to overwhelming requests from the public who wanted to have a physical record from this album, on June 29th, 2013 Demajors Records officially released the Daur Baur album, and at the same time provided an opportunity for those who missed the crowdfunding program to have the album. Finally, in August 1st 2013, Pandai Besi had their first concert to launch and celebrete the succesful recording from the support of the crowdfunders.
